Energy storage will enter the fast lane of development

“Building a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient next-generation energy system to maximize the development and utilization of renewable energy and improve energy efficiency is one of the goals of China's energy revolution. Develop efficient, low-cost, long-life energy storage technology and Widely used in the first generation of energy systems, it can meet the peaking frequency modulation of high-renewable energy power systems and the energy consumption requirements of end users." For power systems, energy storage mainly refers to the storage of electrical energy. Electrochemical energy storage is widely used as a commonly used energy storage technology, including lithium ion batteries and lead acid batteries. Since last year, the development of electrochemical energy storage has ushered in an explosive period. In 2017, the newly installed capacity was 121,000 kilowatts, with an annual growth rate of 45%; in the first half of 2018, it was 100,000 kilowatts, a year-on-year increase of 127%, accounting for 14% of the global new scale. Among them, the fastest-growing and largest market share of energy storage applications is grid-side applications, accounting for 42%. It is predicted that in the whole year of 2018, China's electrochemical energy storage growth will reach 144%, and by 2020 the capacity will reach 2 million kilowatts.


“The large-scale construction of energy storage can effectively improve the utilization efficiency of the power grid. When the power is surplus, the energy storage can store the energy and release the supply when the power is tight. Energy storage will become an important part of the future power system


In recent years, China has formulated a number of policy programs to promote the development of energy storage applications. On June 3, the Outline of the Thirteenth Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development prepared by the State Council included energy storage as one of 100 major projects. In 2017, the five ministries and commissions jointly issued the "Guiding Opinions on Promoting Energy Storage Technology and Industrial Development", which is China's first national-level energy storage policy and comprehensive strategic deployment of domestic energy storage technology development and application.


At the forum, Qi Zheyi, deputy chief engineer of the State Power Grid Co., Ltd. Power Dispatching Control Center, introduced that the State Grid Corporation adopted various measures to actively promote the implementation of relevant national policies. The company has established a national key laboratory for new energy and energy storage, and continuously improved its research capabilities in energy storage. In the practice of energy storage, in recent years, a large number of effective attempts have been made by power companies represented by State Grid Jiangsu Power. In July of this year, the largest power grid side energy storage power station in China, Zhenjiang Eastern Power Grid 200,000 kWh energy storage power station was completed and put into operation, successfully filling the power shortage of Zhenjiang this summer, improving the reliability and efficiency of power grid operation. At the same time, the energy storage power station successfully connected to the large-scale source network-friendly interactive system that the company has been working on for the past two years, and upgraded it to the “source network storage system” to integrate power, power grid, users and energy storage. Combined, it has a “safety lock” for the safe operation of large power grids.


A good start has laid a solid foundation for the development of Jiangsu energy storage. “We have established energy storage technology standard systems from five aspects of planning, design, acceptance, operation and maintenance, and dispatching, and we have increased investment in energy storage from research projects, personnel training, and laboratory construction. Currently, Jiangsu is planning more. At the same time, the State Grid Jiangsu Power has deepened the role of the grid side energy storage power station, and optimized the energy storage control system to make the energy storage power station play a greater role.


“In the millisecond scale control of the power grid, we can control the energy storage to achieve fast and accurate response in the initial stage of the loss of UHV DC power, avoiding the larger-scale power grid accident caused by the drastic drop in frequency.” Jiangsu Electric Power Research Institute Planning and Development Research Huang Junhui, director of the center, said that at the same time, energy storage can eliminate the instantaneous jitter of the grid frequency and improve the quality of power supply. Jiangsu Zhenjiang Eastern Power Grid Side Energy Storage Power Station has been installed and put into operation since its completion, and has provided a total of 21 million kWh of electricity to the grid, equivalent to 50 days of electricity consumption of 170,000 Zhenjiang residents. As China's first grid-side energy storage scale application project, the project shows the bright prospects of energy storage applications to the whole industry, and also raises an important question: Where is China's energy storage going in the future?


"In combination with the practical experience of energy storage demonstration projects, we have summarized the ten key technologies needed for future energy storage development, including site selection and volume optimization, integration optimization, accident prevention expansion, state assessment, protection control, failure analysis, precision monitoring, and strategy. Optimization, ladder utilization, new energy storage technology, etc." Xu Haiqing said that to overcome the above problems, the government, power grid companies, equipment manufacturers and scientific research institutions must work together to promote the development of the entire industry.


As a "young" element of the power system, energy storage has a long way to go from technology to industry and equipment to the market. The storage energy market in some developed countries is relatively mature, and it has certain reference significance for the domestic energy storage market mechanism. "From the perspective of energy storage business models in developed countries, the supporting role of energy storage in the power grid is diverse, which determines that economic returns are also diverse, rather than relying solely on peak-to-valley electricity price spreads to earn revenue.
